Crystal Head Vodka first entered the market in September of 2008 and immediately took off. By November, they had entered four other U.S. markets, but since the first batch of cases ran out quickly, they couldn't expand further until the following year. If we're going to talk about Crystal Head Vodka, we have to address the iconic skull-shaped bottle. Produced in Europe, the iconic bottle was designed by Dan Aykroyd and John Alexander. Inspired by native tribes (Navajo, Aztec, and Maya) in the Americas and the thirteen Crystal skulls they held, they are meant to reflect qualities of enlightenment and power. They felt like the Crystal head was the best vessel for their spirit.
And over the years, Crystal Head Vodka has made quite the name for itself. They've won several different awards in the United States as well as Russia.
Crystal Head Vodka Options
Crystal Head Vodka carries five different options. Each option comes in a different variation of the classic skull bottle and is blended with pristine Newfoundland water from the country of Canada. Crystal Head Vodka is available in various sizes, including 50 ml, 700 ml, 750 ml, 1.75 L, and even a giant 3 L.
- Crystal Head Original
Crafted with Canadian corn, the Original comes in a classic, clear head. It's smooth with subtly sweet notes of vanilla.
- Crystal Head Aurora
The Aurora is crafted with high-quality English wheat. The Aurora carries more floral notes and a hint of anise. The Aurora bottle is a beautiful iridescent finish that really catches the eye.
- Crystal Head Onyx
The Onyx bottle screams luxury with its black finish. It has semi-sweet and clean taste and a hint of spice and citrus. The Onyx is crafted with premium Blue Weber agave from a single farm in Mexico.
- Crystal Head John Alexander
Like the Original, the John Alexander edition is crafted with Canadian corn. The John Alexander edition is limited edition and hand-decorated by John Alexander, famously known for his landscape painting. It launched in 2018. The workshop spanned over three years in Italy, where Alexander painted 25,000 bottles.
- Crystal Head Pride
Made with Canadian corn, the Pride edition is a limited edition bottle that celebrates diversity and equality. Crystal Head Vodka prides itself on using its platform to educate and support.
The Distillation and Filtration
Crystal Head's distillation and filtration process are extensive. On average, distilleries distill vodka two or three times. For reference, Crystal Head distills the Original four times and the Aurora five times.
Each of the Crystal Head options goes through a thorough filtration process. The vodka is filtered seven times. For the last three filtrations, the vodka filters through layers of semi-precious crystals, otherwise known as Herkimer diamonds. Herkimer diamonds are commonly known to promote positivity, healing, and wellbeing.
Now, you're probably thinking, seriously? Why would they filter their vodka with crystals? You'd probably be surprised to learn that when taste-tasters tested out a crystal-filtered option and a non-crystal-filtered option, the testers always chose the crystal-filtered vodka. The testers decided that the crystal-filtered vodka tasted better and smoother. The Herkimer diamonds make all the difference.

Espresso Martini Featuring Crystal Head
Crystal Head Vodka makes a delicious Espresso Martini, otherwise known by Crystal Head as a Night Cap. And as we all know, the Espresso Martini is all the rage as of late. If you want to sip on something rich, decadent, and creamy, this Espresso Martini is for you! Here's what you'll need:
2 parts Crystal Head Vodka
1 part Espresso
1/2 part Coffee Liqueur (Kahlúa is great for Espresso Martinis)
1/4 part Simple Syrup (If you have a sweeter tooth, you can adjust to taste)
Ice
Coffee bean
Instructions: Start by brewing your espresso. You can go about this step how you usually make your coffee. You can even use a cold brew if you don't feel like brewing coffee and waiting for it to cool. Once your espresso has cooled, add all your vodka, espresso, coffee liqueur, simple syrup, and ice to a cocktail shaker and shake vigorously for around 20 seconds. Doing so will get your foam to form. Strain into your cocktail glass quickly. Garnish with a coffee bean and serve!
