Now, for Ole Smoky, Tennessee remains home and the heart of the operation. After Tennessee's law changed, Ole Smoky became the first "federally licensed distillery" in Gatlinburg.

The four distilleries include Gatlinburg's "The Holler" and "The Barrelhouse," "The Barn" in Pigeon Forge, and finally, Nashville's "6th & Peabody". The Holler is quite popular. Not only is it the most visited Ole Smoky Moonshine Distillery, but it's also the most visited distillery in the country.

What Is Moonshine?
Before we get into all the moonshine, let's understand what moonshine is.
What is moonshine? Moonshine is an unaged whiskey that's clear in color and made with a corn base. It's strong with a high alcohol content that can be as high as 95%. It's made with three simple ingredients: corn, sugar, and water, but technically, moonshine can be made of anything.
Many assume that moonshine dates back to the 1920s during Prohibition. People were desperate to get their hands on any sort of alcohol when the spirits ban took place. However, moonshine is much older than that. Moonshine dates back to the 18th century. It originated in England but quickly found its way to the United States. Although it wasn't born during the Prohibition Era, it did thrive tremendously during that period in time.
During Prohibition, moonshine was made at night to avoid detection, under the moon's shine. And that's where the name comes from, moonshine. Moonshine was known by many other names as well. A few examples include white whisky, white dog, and white lightning. It was also known as Mountain Dew.
