What Is Blended Whiskey?
In the broadest terms, blended whisky is a drink made from two types of whiskey. The mixture can also include flavorings, neutral grain spirits, and additional coloring. In most cases, the whiskeys are from the products of different malt and grain distilleries. One of them can be a more premium bourbon whiskey while the other might be a single malt whisky.
Thanks to being blended, these drinks usually have a lower price point than other malt and grain whiskies, like a straight Kentucky bourbon whiskey. However, there are some premium bottles of blended whiskey available. Whatever the case, the combinations produce exceptional flavors.
The different types of blends are regulated by authorities from country to country, so there are a lot of different standards that a blend must reach to qualify for a particular label. The most popular type is blended Scotch whiskey, which is regulated under the Scotch Whisky Regulations by the UK Parliament.
Qualities of Blended Whiskey
- Age: Most blended whiskeys don't have their age on their labels, but regulatory bodies still have minimum age requirements. For blended Scotch, spirits must be at least three years old. In the U.S., straight whiskey must be at least two years old.
- Flavor Family: There are eight recognized flavors for blended whiskies, ranging from fruity to feinty.
- Grain or Malt: Whiskey can either be made from malt or grain. The latter can be any type of grain, like corn or barley. Malt whiskies, on the other hand, can only be distilled from malted barley. These are usually more expensive.
Types of Blended Scotch Whisky
Blended Malt Scotch Whisky
Once called vatted malts, blended malt scotch whisky is a mixture of single malt whiskies from two or more distilleries. Blending these distinct spirits creates a new product that brings together the best qualities of the initial spirits.
Blended Grain Scotch Whisky
Blended grain Scotch whisky is similar to the above in that it's a mixture of whiskies from different distilleries. The biggest difference is, of course, the spirits being made from grains.
Blended Scotch Whisky
While it can be confusing, a blended Scotch whisky without "grain" or "malt" in its name means that both have been used in making the blend. This is the most common type of blended whisky, with brands like Chivas Regal and Johnnie Walker as the most popular choices.
