It's time for some prosecco cocktails!
Let's learn about the beginning of prosecco, what mixes well with the delicious base, and, most importantly, let's make some cocktails!
The Most Popular Sparkling Wine
Prosecco is a favorite worldwide. It's fizzy, fresh, and easy to drink.
The prosecco grape variety originated hundreds of years ago in Trieste, a city in north eastern Italy. It's called prosecco because it comes from the village of prosecco. However, it didn't become globally popular until 2009 or so. Now, prosecco is a staple for cocktails and delicious on its own.
When choosing a prosecco, you want to pay attention to the different types. Prosecco is ranked based on its sugar content. For example, Prosecco Brut has less sugar than a Prosecco Demi-Sec or Dry. It's all on a scale. Prosecco Brut is the most commonly used prosecco in cocktails.
As far as a DOCG status, Prosecco can been classified as a DOCG depending on where it comes from. DOCG is the Denomination of Controlled and Guaranteed Origin, "the highest level of quality for Italian wines."
Lastly, prosecco is not considered champagne. Many people automatically include prosecco in the realm of champagne. It's actually categorized as a sparkling wine.
Great Mixers For Your Prosecco
Prosecco adapts well with many things.
We can start with fruit juices. Classic juice mixers like orange, peach, and grapefruit juice pair well. Blood orange juice also makes a delicious mixer.
You might be surprised that apple cider also goes very well with prosecco. It's worth a try!
It's really very adaptable. You can make a prosecco lemonade with lemon juice and simple syrup—anything goes!
Refreshing Cocktail Time
It's all about a refreshing cocktail that will leave you feeling fresh and new. Prosecco makes some delicious approachable cocktails. And they're perfect for a hot summer day.
Let's get into it. Let's transport to Northern Italy and make some prosecco cocktails!
Aperol Spritz
Let's start with a fan favorite. An Aperol Spritz is a prosecco cocktail that transports you to the coast of Italy. It's a beverage to enjoy before your meal, and what's better than some bright orange flavor? Let's see what it's all about.
- 3 parts dry prosecco
- 2 parts Aperol
- Club soda or sparkling water
- Orange slice
Instructions
Grab your wine glass and fill it with fresh ice. Add your prosecco, followed by your Aperol. Give it a quick stir then top with some club soda or sparkling water.
Garnish with a fresh orange slice. Enjoy!
(Here's a fun little fact: If you want to cut into the bitterness of the Aperol, add a splash of St. Germain Liqueur!)
Hugo Spritz
If you haven't had a Hugo Spritz, you have to change that. Made with St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur, a Hugo Spritz is incredibly refreshing, delicious, and invigorating. It's very light with floral notes. It's also commonly referred to as a St. Germain Spritz. St. Germain Liqueur launched nearly twenty years ago and has continued to grow in popularity ever since. Here's what you'll need to make the excellent cocktail:
- 1 part St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur
- 2 parts dry prosecco
- 2 parts soda water
- 2 sprigs of mint
- Lime or lemon wheel
Instructions
In your glass, add St. Germain Liqueur and a couple of mint sprigs. Muddle for a few minutes. Add fresh ice and prosecco to your glass. Top with soda water and garnish with a lime wheel. Serve and enjoy!
Bellini
For the peach lover who likes a cocktail that's fruity and crispy, a Bellini is for you! Here's what you'll need:
- 2 parts prosecco
- 1 part peach purée
- Peach slice
Instructions
In a champagne flute, add your peach purée, and then top it with prosecco. Garnish with a sweet peach slice and enjoy!
Negroni Sbagliato
I had to include a Negroni Sbagliato with prosecco in it. Why? Because it's iconic! Here's what you'll need to make this icon of a cocktail:
- 1.5 parts Campari
- 1.5 parts sweet vermouth
- Prosecco
- Orange wedge
Instructions
In a glass, add your campari, sweet vermouth, and a handful of ice. Top with prosecco and stir. Garnish with an orange wedge and enjoy!
Campari Spritz
A Campari Spritz is delightfully refreshing if you're a fan of Campari. Campari has a bit of citrus and a bit of spice. If you want to gauge its sweetness, you should know it's not as sweet as Aperol.
Here's what you'll need:
- 2 or 3 parts prosecco
- 2 parts Campari
- 1 part soda water
- Orange slices or olives
Instructions
In your glass, add a handful of ice, Campari, prosecco, and soda water. Garnish with an orange slice or a couple of olives. Serve and enjoy!
