What You Need To Know About Weller Whiskey

Well(er)-Crafted Whiskey

See what I did there?

Weller Whiskey is well-crafted whiskey! Let's get to know the distillery behind the whiskey and the different whiskey options that W.L. Weller has to offer.

Originally, the Stitzel Weller Distillery owned W.L. Weller. Eventually, W.L. Weller was sold, several different times. Now, the Buffalo Trace Distillery is responsible for the popular bourbon whiskey.

Let's get to know the Buffalo Trace Distillery!

Buffalo Trace Distillery

The Buffalo Trace distillery's history goes back, way back! You may be wondering... how far back? Well, to put things into context, Buffalo Trace Distillery is the oldest operating distillery in the United States.

The kicker is that it's been operating continuously, without fail. It made it out of Prohibition, still standing. And that's not all. The distillery made it out of several different natural disasters, still standing. And it continues to do so.

And they have the awards to show for it. They've won some major awards, recently even. Some include the 2022 Global Distiller of the Year and the 2022 American Distiller of the Year.

Other Buffalo Trace Distillery Brands

The Buffalo Trace Distillery is home to quite a few different brands, and I'm sure they'll sound familiar to you. Among them are Buffalo Trace Bourbon (obviously), Eagle Rare, and Van Winkle. Yes, the Pappy Van Winkle! In total, there are just over twenty different brands. That's quite the collection.

The Buffalo Trace Distillery is doing something right!

W.L. Weller Options

W.L. Weller has seven options to choose from. Each bottle has unique qualities, aromas, and finishes. Stay tuned to learn about all the options they have to offer!

Wheated Bourbon

Before we begin exploring the Weller options, we should get acquainted with the word wheated.

For those who aren't familiar, the term wheated, which you'll come across quite often, means the secondary grain that's used in the mash bill is wheat.

Okay, now we're ready to dive in!

Weller Special Reserve

Starting with a popular award-winning option, we have the Weller Special Reserve, the original wheated bourbon that substitutes the wheat for rye grain.

Bottled at 90 proof, the Special Reserve is smooth, exceptionally so. It's sweet with a hint of caramel and you'll notice notes of butterscotch, honey, and a delectably soft woodiness. With a smooth finish, the Special Reserve is great on its own but also delicious in a cocktail.

Weller Antique 107

The Weller Antique 107 is exceptionally popular among the whiskey crowd. It holds its own. Balanced and full-bodied, the Antique is bold, complex, and bottled at 107 proof.

With the Antique, you'll taste more floral and fruity notes alongside an undertone of vanilla.

Expect a cinnamon finish.

Weller Single Barrel

Weller Single Barrel Whiskey is bourbon to be savored. This bottle is special because each barrel is exceptionally unique.

Why? Because they're all different. No two barrels are the same. Each barrel gives you a full-bodied experience that's distinct and full of flavor.

What flavors and notes can you expect from the Single Barrel? Caramel and spices will burst on the palate and finish with notes of coffee, cinnamon, and a dash of slight pepper. Expect your nose to welcome cherry, mint, and a hint of vanilla at the end.

Weller Full Proof

The Weller Full Proof is Larue's original bourbon recipe that uses wheat instead of rye. The whiskey-making process creates a rich whiskey with lovely notes of vanilla and oak.

This non-chill filtered wheated bourbon exudes the scents of vanilla, caramel, and dark cherries. Taste the delectable notes of caramel and toasted oak and experience a long finish with mouth-watering notes of chocolate and crème brûlée!

I don't know about you, but I'm sold!

Weller 12 Year

Aged for much longer than the usual wheated bourbon, the Weller 12-Year is smooth, balanced, and complex.

Fragrant with notes of almond and toasty vanilla, the 12-Year is slightly sweet and decadent.

The finish is long, oaky, and insanely smooth!

William Larue Weller

The William Larue Weller is an exceptional type of Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. It's uncut. It's unfiltered. It's hand-bottled.

Substituting the wheat for rye grain, a method pioneered by W.L. Weller, makes for exquisite tasting notes.

The scents of plums, toffee, pipe tobacco, caramel corn, and new leather are fragrant and balanced. Tastes of marshmallows, figs, nougat, dates, and salted almonds will linger on your tongue. And overall, the whiskey is smooth, flavorful, and sweet.

Delectable, right?

Weller C.Y.P.B

We're all probably wondering what C.Y.P.B stands for, but stay with me! You will really enjoy this option.

Years ago, W.L. Weller gave avid whiskey drinkers the option to create a bottle of bourbon, craft your perfect bourbon.

All they had to do was visit a website and choose everything from the ideal bourbon recipe, the proof, the age, and even the warehouse location. The choice was theirs.

They came up with a wheated recipe bourbon, aged for 8-years on the highest warehouse floors, and bottled at 95 proof.

That was the overwhelming result!

Weller prides itself on giving the consumers what they want.
