Introducing Patrón Tequila
For years, Patrón has been a go-to tequila that you can't go wrong with. From Jalisco, Mexico, Patrón is a premium tequila passionately handcrafted in small batches to give tequila lovers a consistently delicious tequila with impeccable taste.
Patrón joined the tequila game in 1989 and quickly made a name for itself. But the funny story behind its sudden popularity is one we can't ignore.
Was Clint Eastwood The Reason For Patrón's Success?
You're probably wondering... what does Clint Eastwood have to do with Patrón?
Patrón was launched in 1989 by John Paul DeJoria and Martin Crowley. DeJoria happened to be good friends with the famous actor Clint Eastwood. In 1993, Eastwood starred in a movie called In The Line Of Fire. Eastwood, being the good friend he was, gave Patrón a minute of free product placement in the film.
I wouldn't say that it was solely Clint Eastwood that made Patrón famous, but it certainly helps to have a renowned actor tied to your liquor brand.
In 2022, Patrón sold over 3.5 million cases. Eastwood may have helped give Patrón a platform in its early days, but Patrón's consistency throughout the years is Patrón's success alone.
How The World's Finest Tequila Is Made
Patrón takes the tequila-making process seriously. They take extreme care during each step to ensure you get the world's finest tequila.
Let's get into the steps that give us Patrón Tequila.
Quality Control
Quality is essential to Patrón. Patrón doesn't use additives. Additives are typically added to give tequilas and other spirits a specific color or flavor.
Patrón prides itself on using solely natural, raw ingredients to give their products the highest quality and ultra-smooth flavor. It's made with 100% Weber blue agave, producing a premium tequila that's hard to beat.
Harvesting
First, we start with harvesting. For a 100% Weber blue agave to achieve the highest sugar content, it takes seven years to grow fully.
Chopping, Baking, and Crushing
Once the agave is harvested and picked, it is taken to a distillery, where it is chopped and baked in small brick ovens for seventy hours. Once it is done baking, it's crushed down using a "roller mill and ancient tahona stone."
Fermentation
After the agave is crushed, it's fermented. It's during the fermentation process that the sugars will turn into alcohol. The fermentation process takes three days.
Distillation
Next, it's time for the distillation process. The tequila is distilled in copper pot stills. It's during this step that the tequila gets its smooth flavor and finish. It's around this time that tequilas are aged in handmade barrels if needed. For example, extra añejo is aged for ten years.
Bottling
Finally, the tequila is corked and bottled, making it market-shelf ready. Attention goes into tequila-making right down to the corking. From Portuguese cork to French crystal, even the corking of Patrón is done with fine detail.
Classic Tequila Options
Like most every tequila brand, Patrón carries the four classic tequila options. Each option is aged differently to achieve unique flavors and distinct characteristics. The options are:
Patrón El Cielo & Patrón El Alto
Patrón El Cielo and Patrón El Alto are two more elevated tequilas to choose from.
If you're looking for a silver tequila that's incredibly smooth and worth a try, give Patrón El Cielo a try. It's distilled four times to achieve its smooth finish.
If you're looking for a high-end reposado, try Patrón El Alto. Aged for four years, it's smooth, sweet, and handcrafted to perfection.
Gran Patrón
Alongside the tequila classics, Patrón carries some luxury tequilas that are perfect for your liquor cabinet. The luxurious Gran Patrón line launched in 2004, adding a certain level of extravagance to the brand.
Patrón Liqueur
Patrón XO Cafe Liqueur is a combination of silver tequila and the "natural essence of fine coffee." It's the perfect liqueur if you want to make a decadent cocktail. For the days you want a cocktail that feels like dessert, Patrón XO Cafe Liqueur is the option you'll lean towards.
